Teen Fiction is more popular than ever, and with this newfound popularity comes a myriad new titles from many, many authors. Here’s a short rundown of some of the best YA books out right now:
What Happened to Goodbye, by Sarah Dessen – This teen novel is about a young girl who has moved four times in just two years (after the divorce of her parents); each time she changes schools she purposely takes on a brand-new personality. But none of her new roles ever quite seems to work to her advantage. The story captures many of the problems faced in the real world by teenage children of divorced couples in America.
The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton – This book is about the chasm that exists in real life between various social groups, in the high school setting; it goes into the injustices that exist between the social classes, between clicks, and between people with different upbringings.
Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson – A teenage girl is frowned upon by her high school peers because she busted a party she was attending by calling the police; but later, it comes out that the girl had psychologically blocked the single most hideous aspect of that fateful night – it was the night she was raped. This is a story about the hypocrisies of high school life, and of the importance of speaking out during critical moments of one’s life.
Now, I don’t mean women who are texting. I mean sending text messages to women you are interested in. That’s the focus of a lot of research lately, and rightly so. Texting is a huge phenomenon (as I’m sure you know through your own daily cell phone use), and it surely doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon. That means we men need to learn how to use it to it’s fullest potential when texting women. Texting gives us an opportunity to do something that regular phone conversations don’t: actually THINK about what we say before we say it!By saying the right things in our texts we can demonstrate a lot of the key triggers that we need to hit on in order to build attraction: social aptitude, higher value, alpha characteristics, etc. Sometimes we’re not quick enough to say the things we need to when we’re talking in real time with a woman, but texting gives us ample time to craft responses that we know will hit their mark.
The Lorax is viewed by many people as being one of Dr. Seuss’s greatest books. Others view this story to be one of his worst. Often the viewpoints differ on the Lorax based upon a person’s view of environmentalism. The story of the Lorax pits the wise recluse called the Lorax against the greedy forces of industrialization. A creature called the Once-ler, wants to tear down all the trees, thereby making all the good creatures in the forest homeless and abandoned. This environmentalist message and the results from this attempt are obvious and plain. According to Dr. Seuss, conservation is good and rapid expansion is bad. Of course, many people view industrialization as progress and therefore thought this book was close to being propaganda aimed at young children. Dr. Seuss and the Lorax have come into the spotlight once again with the upcoming release of the new Lorax movie in March 2012. Whether more controversy will follow, remains to be seen.

I went to the mall today, and they had a great sale at the stationery store. It was 50% off Father’s Day cards and thank you cards. I couldn’t believe it. I can understand why they discounted Father’s Day cards, because Father’s Day just ended. However, I found it way cool that they had discounted thank you cards. People need thank you cards all year round, but maybe they just got a new shipment in or something. I don’t really care why they did it. All I know is that I bought 10 boxes of all kinds of cards. So now I’ve got enough Father’s Day cards to last the next five years, and maybe enough of the thank you to last a couple of months. I actually send out a lot of those cards. It’s my belief that the more times you show your appreciation, the happier life you lead. I got it from my mom. She’s the happiest person I know.
There definitely is something to be said about these other sorts of things, when you do actually go for these things, you have to consider whether you have something to say on the matter, and often, this entails what are referred to as smart books; you want to think; you want to be challenged; you want to have your imagination run wild, because that is what reading is all about in the end; and you do want to actually digest stuff, that you want to become yourself; you want to surround yourself with all sorts of goodness and kindness, because you want to try to socialize yourself with what you read; that’s the point here, and the point of anything else is just kind of frivolous in the end, which really has to be taken with a grain of salt, you can say. There are so many things to read in this world, you ought to stick to the smart books
